Intermediate Counseling Services
Guidance and Counseling Program
Shallowater Intermediate’s Counseling Program is based on The Texas Model for Comprehensive School Counseling Programs and the American School Counselor Association Model. The foundation of the program is to provide developmentally appropriate assistance for all students, and at the same time additional assistance to students in need of support. The Comprehensive program is based on four components:
- Guidance Curriculum
- Responsive Services
- Individual Planning
- System Support
Guidance Curriculum
Guidance Curriculum provides lessons to students that facilitates growth, development, and transferable skills in the areas of education, career, personal, and social development. The areas addressed are:
- Intrapersonal Effecttiveness
- Interpersonal Effectiveness
- Post-Secondary Planning and Career Readiness

Responsive Services
Responsive Services addresses the immediate needs and personal concerns of students. Although counselors will respond to any student's needs, the following topics have been identified as having a high priority:
- Child Abuse and Neglect
- School Transitions
- Stress and Anxiety
- Family Divorce
- Dealing with Death and Grief

Academic success includes tardies, absences, misbehavior, being new to school, school avoidance, and study skills
Individual Planning
Individual Planning assists students in monitoring and understanding their own education, carrer, and personal-social developement.
Educational areas addressed include:
- Study Skills
- Awareness of Educational Opportunities
- Emphasis on Graduation Options for College Preparation
- Lifelong Learning
- Understadning Test Scores
Career areas addressed include:
- Knowledge of Portential Career Opportunities
- Knowledge of Career and Technical Opportunites

Personal and social areas include:
- Healthy Self Concepts
- Development of Adaptive and Adjustive Social Development
System Support
System Support includes program and staff activities and services including:
- Parent Education
- Teacher and Administration Consultation
- Staff Development of Educators
- Assisting with the School Improvement Plan
- Counselor Professional Development
- Community Outreach
